Materials around us

Materials in the world around us come in three different forms of matter which are solids, liquids and gases. These are all made of matter. It is easy to tell them apart because you can't drink solids and you can't hold on to liquids. Gas is all around us.

Did you know ?

You might be thinking that gases are not as important as liquids and solids but you must remember that without gases we wouldn't even exist.

Solids

Solids can be soft, hard, light and heavy. Solids are things that you can pick up, hold and feel the shape of. Solids can feel rough or smooth and come in different sizes from as small as a marble to as big as a mountain.

Liquids

The most common liquid is water but there are a lot of other liquids. We find a lot of liquids even in our house such as cleaning liquids, vinegar, vegetable oil and soft drinks. Even the sweat that comes out from our body it is a liquid.

Gases

Gases are all around us but we can't see them because they are invisible. Gases have no shape or size and has no surface and oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and so much more are all types of gases.

Facts:

  1. Solids: Most solids can change their shape if they are squeezed or pulled with enough force.
  2. Liquid: Liquid water makes up 60-80 percent of a human body. Liquid takes on the shape of whatever container it is in.
  3. Gases: Gases are much lighter than solids and liquids . A bottle of water weighs 1,000 times more than the same bottle of water vapour.

Our world is filled with solids liquids and gases. All matter can go from one state of matter to another without changing it's chemical subtance.

Changing states

Matter that are solids can be change into a liquid or gas. This can be done by changing its temperature. This is known as changing its state. You can also change liquid to solid such as water to ice , but if you heated up, water it will turn into a gas called water vapor.
