THE FESTIVAL OF SAN LORENZO!

Who was San Lorenzo?

San Lorenzo was an important member of the church when being a Christian was not allowed during Roman times.

Why is San Lorenzo worth celebrating?

There were 7 of these important church people with Lorenzo they were called deacons. 6 of them were executed by the Emperor of Rome. They spared San Lorenzo's life. The Emperor ordered San Lorenzo to enter the church and give him

all of the treasures and gold or he can burn to death. But he didn't listen instead he gave it to the poor . He went empty handed and the Emperor was furious. San Lorenzo was burnt alive slowly on 10th August AD 258. While it was happening he said in pain you've cooked this half of me now do the other half! He was loyal to his church in till the very end.

THAT IS WHY THEY CELEBRATE SAN LORENZO!

How do they celebrate San Lorenzo?

In the beautiful city of Florence in Italy every year on the 10th of August there is a big parade. Everyone dresses up in special costumes. The parade ends at the church and the city is blessed. Then there is a party where everyone gets free pasta and watermelon! Yum! There is music dancing and singing. Then everyone goes to the river to watch the stars. The shooting stars are called San Lorenzo's tears.

It is a very fun day in Florence.

This is me and my family celebrating the festival of San Lorenzo in Florence. I was 5 and a half years old.

We had a great time!
