The African Elephant

The elephant is the largest land animal on Earth. Elephants are mammals and they are warm blooded. There are two types of elephants - the African elephant and the Asian elephant. The Asian elephant is smaller and has smaller ears.



Here are some facts about the African elephant. An African elephant has large fan-shaped ears and long upper teeth called tusks. Elephants weigh about 5-7.5 tons. The biggest elephant ever found weighed as much as 150 men. The largest elephant recorded was 13 feet high and and weighed 27,000 pounds. Elephant eat 7000 pounds of vegetables, fruit, leaves and grass a day.


African elephants are becoming endangered. They are mostly hunted for their tusks to make ornaments. Please stop hurting elephants and hunting them for their tusks.
