MOUNTAINS

Mountains are areas of land that are much higher then the land surrouding them. They are higher and usally steeper than a hill and are generally over 600 metres high. They are often found together in a mountain range.

Mountains are formed when a two tectonic plates move towards each other so the earth gets pushed up. Or it used to be a volcano that is no longer active. Ben Nevis used to be a volcano.

Tectonic plates are also at work under the Atlantic oceans, but instead of two tectonic plates forcing the ground up, the two plates are actally moving apart in oppisite directions. This causes lava to erupt out of the gap that is left.As it cools down, the lava createsa long line of mountains.

THIS IS A MOUNTAIN RIDGE (a lot of mountains).
