Hello everybody,

I hope you are all ok and have been managing to spend some time outside each day. Remember to keep following our three simple rules:

1) Look after yourself 2) Look after each other 3) Look after nature

Each week, I will be uploading some simple, nature-based Forest School and outdoor learning challenges that you can enjoy together at home, in your garden or on your walk each day. If you complete any, please send pictures to your teachers so that I can upload them to the next Forest School blog :)

Thanks, Miss Miah

Forest School Challenges

Challenge 2

Encourage insects to your garden by building them their very own home following these simple steps:

Materials:

  • A large plastic bottle cut into two cylinders
  • sticks
  • leaves
  • anything else you can find e.g. pine cones, bark, cardboard tubes, shredded paper, feathers, broken plant pots, pebbles etc.

Method:

1) Cut your bottle down to shape.

2) Check what materials you have and arrange by size and texture – you may need to snap your twigs to make them a little smaller.

3) If you plan to hang your bug hotel, loop some garden twine round and then start layering your bug hotel. You could do one hotel for on the ground and one for hanging from a tree to see if you can attract different creatures.

4) Stuff it with anything else you found to make it nice and firm, so it doesn’t get blown about!

5) Keep checking every day to see who has moved in!
