MOUNTAINS

What is a mountain

A mountain is a large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising

abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill.

Parts of a mountains

Some mountains have snow on

their peaks (top) all year around.

The level where the snow ends

is called the snowline. Trees often

grow on a mountain's lower slopes,

but it is too cold for them to grow

above a certain level. This is known

as the treeline.
