Desert Hare

location: Nevada desert

life span: 1 to 5 years

herbivore

Originally called Lepus Californicus, the Hare is native to Mexico and USA. This animal eats carrots and fruit. Black-tailed jackrabbits usually occupy semi-grasslands. This fascinating animal has many dynamic features. Read on to find out more!

Diet

Their food supplies are the following: plants, grass, fruit and carrots . This helps them reserve fat for winter hibernation. If they can't find these prey then they might start eating trees, which are very nutritious for jackrabbits. Even though they live in extremely dry lands , they manage to survive . The jackrabbit must find food or it has 0% chances of survival. The most difficult season for these incredible hares is the autumn season. Furthermore, the Jackrabbit has paws to help them to decompose their food. Human development on the natural habitat of jack rabbits means there is a lack of food for them.

Appearance

The hare has 2 long ears ( which can hear in range of 1 km ). It usually has brown eyes and a gentle skull - even a small collision can damage it. Also, it has long legs to bounce whilst running to increase speed. The jack rabbit's short tail with black stripes can sense any danger through their extreme sensitivity to vibration. Usually hares have bony legs which have evolved to give them the gift of speed. In addition to their light bone structure, the hares are able to produce a powerful scratch ( which could give you a nasty infection).

Habitat

The jackrabbit loves warmth and dry grasslands. They dig holes for the cold and humid nights in the desert . The ground keeps the warmth of the sun therefore the hares do not freeze. Although the desert is dry, it still has some plants. The plants are the vital key to the Jack rabbit's life span and survival. The climate in the deserts is challenging due to the fact that there is extreme weather both at night and day. There is as little as 25 cm of rain annually. The Jackrabbit are a very tasty prey for predators. The worst enemies of the Hare are the following : Coyote, Lynx , Desert eagle,Vulchers and Bobcats.
