How to use Roman numerals
by Cameron
To start off you need to know the basic Roman numerals, so here are numerals from one to a thousand.
I = 1 V = 5 X = 10 L = 50 C = 100 D = 500 M = 1000
When using Roman numerals you can't use more than 3
letters in a number. So for numbers that
are like 4 or 9,you need to do this:
You need to round
the number to the nearest multiple
of 5. Then you write how much of a gap is between the multiple of 5 and the
number you're trying to make. You write that before you write the multiple of 5. For example:
4 = IV 9 = IX 400 =CD
900 = CM
Here's how to do the more complex things.
If you're trying to make a number bigger than 1,000 for example 23, 472 you write the number 23 in Roman numerals then put a line over it that equals 23,000, because if you put a line over a number it times that number by 1000. So XXIII = 23,000 and then you do the rest.
For numbers that are above 1,000,000, here's what you do.
Get M which equals 1,000 and you should know that 1,000 X 1,000 = 1,000,000 so you do M.
