Rooftoppers
Sophie lives in a house in London with her guardian, Charles. On her first birthday, she went on a ship, the Queen Mary, an event that changed her life forever. For the ship sank, and she was one of the only survivors, along with Charles. She is confident her mother survived, but nobody believes her. Aged twelve, she finds out she is to be taken away from Charles and enrolled in an orphanage. But then she makes an amazing discovery; her mother was French, and the adventure begins there. Runaways from the law, she and Charles go to Paris, and stay at the Hotel Bost, where her room has a skylight that leads out onto the roof- where she meets Matteo, a rooftopper. She joins him in a wild life, spending the nights exploring the rooftops of Paris. They hear cello music- and they know, from an eccentric instrument seller, that her mother played the cello. After many hours of painstaking searching and a confrontation with some rival rooftoppers, they find her. This is a wonderful story with a heartwarming ending.
