Incoming!!!!! Great new project from Ms Foster!!!!
Topic: Literacy/Topic
Purpose: To create a Class Encyclopaedia on animals for display
There are 3 parts - You can start today and if you dont have time you can continue with it throughout the holidays!
Task A: Write an animal fact-file on a fictional (make-believe) Rainforest creature.
1. Name: (you can adapt the name of a real animal. e.g., a Tree Frog becomes Lime Green Tree Hopper)
2. Origin: (Country, rainforest region)
3. Skin colour and markings (e.g. strawberry red fins with tangerine spots)
4. Texture (e.g.razor sharp scales, wart-like bumps, they gluey slime oozes from a glands behind its ears)
5. Size (small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the size of a fingernail, microscopic)and
6. Special characteristics: it's pop-out eyes roll around in their sockets, it makes a whooping noise in its throat, it ruffles its sail-like fins in the sun, it's head turns 360 degrees, it's skin flushes red if you disturb it
7. Food/Prey (passion fruit seeds, avocado flesh, honeysuckle nectar, insects, millipedes)
8. Habitat (e.g. nest, den, burrow, river bank, inside a flower head/ in the emergent layer, canopy, understory, forest floor)
9. Habits (it likes to hide in the trumpet like bell of the nightshade orchid, it can often be seen at dawn hanging upside down from a trailing liana)
10. Young: how many are born? What do they look like? How do they develop?

Task B: Now use the information/research you gathered from task A to write a short descriptive paragraph:
EXAMPLE - The Brazilian Speckled Tree Hopper is a shy but inquisitive creature. Just 1 cm long from nose to tail, it would sit comfortably on the nail of your little finger. Lime green in colour with a sprinkling of brown freckles on its belly, it is perfectly camouflaged against the citrus tree that is its home. Despite it's small size, it makes a surprising amount of noise. At dawn, it's high-pitched gurgle echoes across the Rainforest canopy, welcoming the sunrise. Mostly, it feeds on gnats, midges and leaf-cutter ants, but it has occasionally been known to tackle bark beetles twice it's size! The hopper never sits still. Always on the lookout for predators, it's beady eyes constantly roll around in its sockets as it tirelessly hops from branch to branch. When night falls it crawls into a seed pod or the folds of a flower, emerging at dawn to sip the dew that drips from the leaves around.
