1. I think cold times mean when he was younger he used to get really cold because he didn't have enough clothes.
2. I think he means it was so cold that it felt it was biting his skin.
3. I think he described his writing to a well because it was deep and meaningful.
4. when Jim drinks from the well not only is he drinking he must now draw and drink deeply.
5. I think 'his breath pleading' means he so thirsty that it felt like his throat was pleading.
6. I think Jim relies on animals and weather to help him.
7. it was freezing so Jim made a warm fire to keep warm.
