I want all of you to join in the shared writing task I told you about yesterday:

I thought you might like to try arguing with each other for a change! If you go to My Files and then click on Shared Files over on the left, you should see a file called ‘4M Debate – Football‘. If you open that, and then click the little ‘Edit’ button in the top left corner, you should be able to click on the shared page to join in our debate. Respond to each other's points of view, and use your persuasive language.

11.30 Spelling Practice - From the Week One Spelling Pack - Task 1:

Without looking at the spelling list, make a list of all the words you can think of

that end with a ‘-shun’ sound. Sort them into columns based on how you think the ending of the word is spelt. Now look at your lists. What do you notice about the first part of each word?

The root words are all verbs, with a suffix on the end to turn the verb into a noun. But if the verb ends with ‘e’ you take that letter off first. For example:

inform + -ation = information

ador(e) + -ation = adoration

sens(e) + -ation = sensation

prepar(e) + -ation = preparation

Can you think of any more? Look up the meanings of any words you don’t recognise in a dictionary.

Notes: Strictly speaking, the suffixes are ‘-ion’ and ‘-cian’.

• ‘-tion’: the most common ending, is used if the root word ends in ‘t’ or ‘te’

• ‘-cian’: common in occupations/jobs; used if the root word ends in ‘c’ or ‘cs’

• ‘-sion’: used if the root word ends in ‘d’/’de’ or ‘s’/’se’ *

• ‘-ssion’: used if the root word ends in ‘ss’ or ‘mit’

*Exceptions: attend/attention, intend/intention
