5 K's Of Sikhs
Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak over 500 years ago. He is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.It is a faith whose followers are called "Sikhs". The word Sikh means 'disciple' or ' learner'.
Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth Sikh Guru and founded the Sikh warrior community called Khalsa in 1699 and introducing the Five K's,the five articles of faith that Khalsa Sikhs wear at all times .The Five K's are five items and they are as follows:
1.Kesh: The Kesh also known as Kesa means uncut long hair and Sikhs wear a turban to keep it tidy.A Sikh never cuts or trims any hair as a symbol of respect for the perfection of God's creation.
2.Kangha: It is a small wooden comb that Sikhs use twice a day and it is a symbol of cleanliness. Combing their hair reminds Sikhs that their lives should be tidy and organized.
3.Kara: It is an iron/steel bangle worn on the arms of Sikhs and it's circle-shaped symbolise God as never ending.It is a symbol of permanent bonding to the community as well.
4.Kachera: It is a short trouser undergarment with a tie-knot worn by Sikhs. It symbolises self-respect and leaving old ideas behind to follow new better ones.
5.Kirpan: It is a dagger which symbolises a Sikh's duty to come to the defence of those in serious and immediate danger. All Sikhs should wear Kirpan on their body at all times as a defensive side-arm.
