- The cold times that he'd experienced when he was growing up was living in Alaska. Alaska is a really cold, icy country so the winters would have been very cold and horrible.
- The wind biting into his skin might mean he's got frost bite, but it also means he's very cold.
- The writer has compare Jim's knowledge to a well because the text says it's a well of knowledge and he's got lots of knowledge for survival.
- When Jim drinks from his well, he is actually surviving the harsh winters of Alaska.
- His breath is pleading which means that his breath wants warmth.
- Jim also relies on crafting and fighting techniques for survival. He's got a wolf skin on his head so he probably killed it so he could keep warm.
