On 9th February 2016, Year 5 made a Viking soup called pottage and soda bread to go with it. First, we went round the classroom doing different activities. The activities were tasting and identifying herbs, making a recipe for the Vikings, creating a menu for the Vikings, making an eat well plate, preparing the bread mixture with a partner and making a title page for bread and soup.
Most of the class did not like most of the herbs and got up to get drinks but some did like the herbs and didn't get up for the drinks. Then we had to explain what the herbs would have been used for in Viking times. Next, we made our own recipe for the Vikings. We included all of the Viking's favourite pottages such as leek, carrot and cabbage flavoured pottage. Then we created our menu for the Vikings and decorated it with colours and pictures. We included our recipes from earlier in our menu. In our eat well plate we included carbohydrates, fruit and veg, protein, fats and dairy. Everything everybody needs to stay healthy and fit. After that we made our bread mixture with a friend. During making our mixture, we got loads of it on our hands.
After first break we continued making our bread mixture with a friend. Finally, we made our title pages about bread and soup. We did not include much information, the pages were mainly just full of drawings. Just before lunch we started to add milk to our bread mixture to make it into dough.
After lunch, we carried on making our dough and started to form a shape for our bread. Some people did just one slice of bread but some people did two small ones. After we had formed a shape for our bread we put them on trays on our tables. Shortly after, our slices of bread were put into the oven. While we were waiting we carried on with the activities we did not finish.
Finally, when our bread was ready six people had to go and get the trays with our bread on them. The teacher then held the slices of bread up one by one and if no one went up to collect the soda bread, they would not get their slice. After a couple of minutes the soup was ready and we all got a bowl of soup with our slices of bread. Some of us took the soda bread home. I picked up my spoon and tasted the soup and it was... delicious!!!
