HMS Challenger

THE SHIP

  1. It was a very large ship, 61m in length.
  2. It had an armoured knight with a silver chest plate on it which is now in the Oceanography centre and the only part of this ship left.
  3. It was made in England in February 1858
  4. It was made of wood.
  5. In 1870 it will start its trip around the world.
  6. 15 of the ships 17 guns were removed for laboratories and workrooms ready for the journey


THE JOURNEY


  1. The captain was called George Nares
  2. He had a crew of 200 men.
  3. The journey started on 7th December 1872.
  4. The journey had no less than 362 stops over 127,000km
  5. 3.5 years long
  6. Lots and lots of information was found during this time which has helped us in the future.
  7. Journey ended in May 1876 in the UK.



HOW THE HMS CHALLENGER HAS HELPED US


  1. Found lots of new animals on the journey, lots of these are in museums around the world.
  2. The information they found is still used in researching today.
  3. Their information showed us the effect of climate change on the ocean.
  4. Recorded the scale of the Mariana Trench.
  5. Recorded how big the Pacific Chasm is.
