MIGRATION

Human migration Animal migration

Human migration is people moving from one place to another to stay there.

Sometimes the movement is voluntary and sometimes people are forced to move because of war or other natural disasters.

People move for better-paid jobs and a higher quality of life.

People who migrate are called migrants, emigrants or immigrants.

Animal migration is when animals move on a regular cycle.

Many mammals, birds, fishes, insects and other animals move from place to another at certain times of the year.

Migration is part of the life cycle of these animals.

Many migrate to breed or to find food.

Others migrate to hibernate, or rest for the winter or because the weather is too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry.

Animals migrate across water, land or air.

Some whales swim from cold polar regions to warmer waters in winter.

Some earthworms move from the top of the soil to deeper underground.

Animals can travel a few miles or several thousand miles.

Migrations can take place during the day (like geese) or at night (like sparrows).
