Do we need homework?

There are many arguments for and against having homework in primary. In my verbal debate here were some points we discussed:

For homework;

-h/w is important for independent learning

-it is a chance to recap and practise what has been learnt

-it helps children if they are struggling and need extra help

-h/w is preparation for secondary school, where h/w is set more regularly

-children become lazy and too relaxed if h/w is not set

-a chance for children to enjoy what they are learning

Against homework;

-h/w is too much pressure for children

-after school children should have a chance to relax after having a long day

-h/w can be stressful to complete all tasks

-h/w should be creative such as baking, investigations, art

-children should be able to choose their own activities

-there can be no time or space to do h/w and other things at home
