Pottery!

Hello everyone, todays blog is going to be about clay pots we made at school! It is going to be a set of instructions on how to make it, and a picture of me and the finished result! We made clay pots as our topic in class is the 'Stone Age!' You should try it out, it is so much fun!

Firstly, you make a circular base about 0.5cm thick to be the bottom of your clay pot. Make sure it is flat, but thick enough so it will not break in the process of making the rest of your Stone Age clay pot. We had a limited amount of clay, but you can use as much as you need!

Make a base

Roll out a sausage of clay

Next, roll out a long sausage of clay, long enough to go around the base a couple of times to make the pot structure. Don't be afraid to dab your finger in some water to make the rolling easier, as the clay can dry out quickly as you make your pot. Make sure not to flood your pot in water, or it will get really soggy and it will take ages to set/dry.

Place the sausage of clay around the base

After that, slowly rotate the base of the pot as the sausage of clay piles up on the sides; make sure you do this in a circular motion as you want your clay pot to be round. The more clay you use, the taller your pot; so the less clay you use, the shorter your pot. Make sure it is thick enough (about 1cm) or your pot will just fall apart.

Smooth out the sides

Later, you smooth out the sides as you don't want to see the sausage lines from earlier! This makes the pot look more realistic and professional! An easy way to do this is to use a little water so the clay doesn't fall apart!

Carve intricate designs

Lastly, get a twig from outside and use it to carve intricate, geometric designs once you have finished your clay pot! Or, if you would like, you could always use professional tools if you want to cheat!

Top tip: If you are struggling to smooth out the sides, or the clay is drying/crumbling, just use the slightest bit of water to soften it up! Don't use too much though, or your pot will not dry quickly or with ease!
