Dear Parents/Carers,

Please find enclosed some information about this term in the End Bay (Orion, Heracles and Perseus classes).

On a regular basis Mr. Gulliford and Ms. Boseley-Yemm will also be working with your children.

Numeracy

This term we will be covering counting, partitioning and calculating, decimals, negative numbers, fractions, data handling and shape.

Every Friday or Monday we are aiming to run math’s problems and investigations with a focus on real life applications.

The whole school focus this term has not been yet set, so we will let you know as soon as it becomes available.

Literacy

This term Year Five will focus on Instructional texts followed by significant children’s authors and persuasive writing, Year Six will begin narrative writing in the genre of horror.  The whole school focus for this term will be set shortly and your child will be given appropriate targets in relation to this common focus.  Please ask your child about these targets and bear them in mind when doing homework.

Project

Our project is ‘Take Me to the River and will cover different aspects of Geography, PSHE and Art.  In relation to this topic, children will be learning about the homeless. In conjunction with our topic about river we are having a guided visit to the Thames Foreshore atChiswick on a Rivers and Environmental Issues workshop on Thursday 12th September 2013.

Heracles will be attending an art workshop at the Tate Modern. Perseus and Orion will also attending an art workshop but at the Royal Academy of Arts, related to the exhibition ‘Australia’.

The PE timetable for Heracles Monday and Wednesday, Orion Monday and Wednesday, Perseus Wednesday and Friday; children need to bring their PE kit into school for those particular days.

P.A.C.T folders

Children are expected to read regularly each week. They need to change their books as often as possible and write a book review after finishing their book or chapter every week.  PACT books contain information about what your child is expected to do at home.  PACT books will be checked by your class teacher once a week.  Please remind your child to change their book regularly and keep up with their comments by listening to your child every week.  Please talk to your class teacher if you have any queries about this.

Water Bottles

The school encourages children to bring fresh water every day. We ask that they take home their bottles daily, to be washed and re-filled.

Birthdays

We are always happy to acknowledge your child’s birthday, however you may know that the school received ‘Healthy School Status’ and with this in mind could any treat sent in on your children’s birthdays be kept to small fun size sweets, rather than cakes, crisps and party bags?

Homework

Please support your children with their homework. It will be sent out on a Thursday and due in by Wednesday.  Children will be taking reading/spelling words every week as well as literacy and numeracy work. Literacy and numeracy homework will be linked to the work done in class that week.  If you feel unable to support your child with homework please contact your class teacher as soon as possible.

Teachers are usually around at the end of the day for a chat, please do not hesitate to approach us if you wish to discuss any of this.  Alternatively you can make an appointment to see your class teacher to discuss any concerns you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Nadia Khan, Martin Shuttleworth and Sofia Khanum
