Blog about making a model lighthouse

Today in school we made a model lighthouse out of junk modelling even though this was not the real one it was still pretty good. Firstly, we collected toilet rolls and stacks them upon each other if it was too short to fit the wires in. I worked in a group with Harry and Emily G and the teacher taped 2 toilet rolls together for us with duck tape. The teacher gave us 2 pieces of green paper to stick the bottom of the toilet roll onto as it was open. Also, the tables were each given a light bulb, battery, battery case, crocodile clip and some wires to make our working light in the light house.

We started off by measuring how long and wide the tissue roll paper would be and sketching the bottom of it onto the green piece of paper we were given. Next, we attached all the wires and the battery together on to the light bulb to make the light inside there working. We were also each given a clear plastic cup to attach our wires onto. I cut a small hole in the other green paper, small enough to fit the light bulb top in it. After that, we sellotaped the green piece of paper to the plastic cup and started to put all the wires into the toilet roll.

We were given a white and red piece of card to make our lighthouse decorations on because normally a lighthouse would contain of the colours white and red it make the ships see it better. Emily G and Harry cut the piece of strips into 2 cm apart and i glued the strips of paper onto the lighthouse to make it look competed. After that we were about finished and ready to hand our in but on the last minute we decided to add a small little door on the front of the lighthouse to make it look more realistic.

I would say that the easiest part to do was the cutting of the strips and to glue them onto the lighthouse. The more trickier parts were when we had to put all the wires together because we got it sometimes muddled up and ours didn't work first time so we had to redo it and see what we did wrong which i thought was very hard. Overall i really enjoyed making the lighthouse and i would say you should be very careful when you are cutting the holes for the light bulb to go in or you may have made it too big or too small.
