Learning in 5P- End of Spring term!

We have come to the end of the Spring term and we have lots on in year 5. We are currently rehearsing for our Easter Service.

English

In our English work we have been looking at developing character and setting for a Norse myth.

We have been looking at desriptive language that we can use to describe our mythical setting of Alheim, which is in Asgard.

We also made character booklets which list all the features of the different characters in a range of Norse myths. We looked at how their speech and actions informed us of their character (showing not telling). We all had our favourite characters!

Riley- 'My favourite is Loki because he is mischievous and entertaining in the stories.'

Amelia- 'My favourtie character is the goddess Sif because she is very beautiful and helps all the farmers to grow their crops.'

Taylor-' My favourite is Thor- The god of thunder- because he is brave and stong. Although he can be hot tempered too!'

Lily- 'I like sif because she has beautiful golden hair and is kind to others- I was cross when Loki cut off her hair, I felt very sorry for her!'

Mini Profile on Sif-

Adjectives- Beautiful, gorgeous, caring, kind, romantic.

Speech- 'my crowning beauty, my hair has gone!'- this shows that she was protective of her hair and how important it was to her, it is what made her.

We will be writing a part of a class myth at the end of this project- 'Ragnar the Great'

Maths

We have all been looking at area, perimeter and angles in our Maths work. We feel like we have become confident using a protractor and discovering different ways of measuring area and perimeter.

We know that the different types of angles are:

Right angle

Reflex

Angles on a straight line = 180 degrees.

Angles in a Triangle = 180 degrees

Angles in a quadrilateral= 360 degrees.

Taylor- 'This week I have learn't how to find the area of compound shapes'

Amelia and Lily- 'We feel confident in using a protractor because at first we found it hard to measure angles using one.'

Jack-' I have learn't to use a 360 degree protractor with Mt.T.'

Riley- ' I feel that I can work out the area of shape with larger measurements.'

Topic- Vicious Vikings.

We have been learning all about the Viking religion and what they believed happened when you died.

Valhalla- This was a place in Asgard, it was a great feasting hall with a roof made of shields. You only made it here if you were a fierce and brave warrior. If you were a coward or broke Viking law you would not enter.

When the Vikings came to England they began to settle and over time their belief in many Gods (they were pagans) became interlinked with the religion of England which was Christianity. We drew Celtic crosses with a range of Viking Gods, symbols and letters (runes) to represent the merging of religious beliefs.

DT-

We have been sawing away in DT this week, creating birdhouses. We cut up 12 pieces of wood to form a cube/cuboid frame and stuck it together with Marvin and put triangles on each corner for support. We created the sides by painting our designs and covering them with Marvin to create a gloss and to harden them. We all really enjoyed making them!
