Year four flyers floor fellow year fours!

Ashmount’s year four athletics team were crowned the winners of the inaugural Islington Sport hall Athletics, held at the Sobell Centre. Over an afternoon of 14 events our boys and girls were head and shoulders the best over anything the other 12 schools from Islington could throw at us.The boys were victorious in 6 of their 7 events whilst the girls won 4 of theirs.

The girls were first up on the track, whilst the boys headed off to compete in three field events. Millie and Henrietta recorded the quickest time in the 1+1 relay and then came 2nd in the 2+2.Next up were the relays which saw the 4x1 team of Millie, Henrietta, Ella and Thora finish 3rd of the 13 schools. Our 2 + 2 relay team of Millie and Henrietta went one step better finishing 2nd and then we secured a 1st place in the Over/Under relay, winning thanks to Mae, Jodie, Ella and Thora.

In the field the girls excelled again, as Henrietta and Mae recorded the furthest distance, and the Soft Javelin saw us finish 2nd through Millie and Mae. The final event was the Long Jump in which we sealed 4th spot.So onto the boys could they match the girls, yes and more was the answer.

Our sprint kings of Han and Stephane got the ball rolling winning both the 1+1 and 2+2, it was then over to the 4x1 relay team of Stephane, Mohammed, Harry and Kayvon who also triumphed, with slick baton changes and pure speed. The final track event was the Over/Under Relay where we had to settle for 2nd thanks to the quartet of Han, Harry, Mohammed and Kayvon. The field events were all dominated by Ashmount as we won all three.

First up in the were Chest Push, Stephane and Harry, the Long Jump saw Stephane and Han reunited to win first place and finally in the Soft Javelin the combined throws of Harry and Kayvon were better than anything else on show.So it was then down to waiting for the results. Called out in descending order the children waited in silence and anticipation, as we got down to the single figures we were still to be called out.

Then the third school was announced, which was Canonbury. That left two with Ashmount one of them. The suspense was over as Laycock were called as finishing 2nd which left us as champions, and thoroughly deserved ones as well. The achievements of the children cannot be emphasised enough, they have worked really hard in preparation for the event, and then on the day put our plans into action. On the big stage they let their talent and skills do the talking and their winning margin of 98 points was incredible.

Our Year 6 children took part in a similar event a couple of months ago and I compared the times and distances from both competitions. It threw up some amazing numbers. For example Han and Stephane’s Long Jump score would have been enough to win the Year boys event, and both our boys and girls 1+1 relays would have finished 4th in the Year 6 events. So the benchmark has been set by the children the challenge is now can they continue as the years go and fulfil the potential they have demonstrated, I certainly think they can do
