Friday 18th January
This week we began our unit on the Lion King, focusing on the characters in the film and the animals which live in the African savannah.
We learned new words to describe the characters using the activities 'rainbow characters,' 'clues' and by writing on sentence strips with partners. We started to write character descriptions but didn't get very far before being snowed off! In numeracy we are concentrating on improving our calculation strategies and working independently.
We have been reading in groups with Mrs Clements and Mrs Rooke and learning about captions. We matched the captions giving information about Kenyan animals to their pictures and had a go at writing our own about stills from the Lion King. Mrs Clements said they were so good she wants to save them to go into our end of year reports as a special surprise for our Mums and Dads!
On Tuesday we enjoyed a Lion King carousel morning with Year 2. We carried out some practical maths to total groups of animals, labelled the features of the Savannah, made Simba masks to talk about with our parents at home, researched animals on the National Geographic website, and took part in a range of other topic based activities. All the adults were very impressed with our eagerness to take part, independence and with the work we produced.
Mrs Ellis has started a special Phonics group in the afternoons and she has been very pleased with the progress of the children in her sessions.
On Friday school closed early due to bad weather. Enjoy your fun in the snow, children (and parents!), we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Monday 28th January
Last week we wrote descriptions of the places in the Lion King using exciting words called adjectives. We used the zone of relevance to sort words and to learn their meanings. We also drew maps to show Simba's journey.
In maths we practised counting on by putting the biggest number in our heads and using our fingers. Mrs Clements said we were really good at it!
In Creative Arts we drew cave pictures on sandpaper, did some animal rubbings with crayons and animal dot to dots.
In Phonics with Mrs Rooke we learned some tricky words and the phonemes ue, ew, wh and ph. In Mrs Clements' group we learned about split digraph u_e and i_e.
We also learned some new footwork in our African dance.
