Islington Girls Primary Schools Cup
Our girls’ team kicked off their season with a more than commendable Finals Day appearance which saw them eliminated at the group stage. As with the boys, 19 schools over the course of two days played out fixtures to see who would make it to the Finals Day where the top 8 would contest to be crowned champions. We arrived on Wednesday with a new look side, and in our first game took on the impressive Laycock.
Despite being under pressure we defended excellently and held on for a 0-0 draw. The next fixture was against St Joan of Arc, and yet again the girls showed their durability and spirit. The first half saw us down to 6 players as Zoe picked up an injury and needed treatment. The girls battled bravely and then inspired by Zoe’s re-introduction pressed forward looking for a winner.
This came thanks to Fedan and we had picked our first win.
The final group game against Hargrave Park ended 0-0 but enough for us to finish second and earn a place for Finals Day on Friday. The standard was still very good and we were unfortunate to lose 2-0 to Montem in our first game. Next up we played Canonbury and goals were hard to come by with the match finishing 0-0.
It was a similar story in the final fixture against St Marks where it finished 0-0 and ended our hopes of a semi-final spot. Despite not progressing any further there were lots of positives to take, including winning the Fair Play Award and hopefully this experience will stand the girls in good stead for the rest of the season.
