The Ancient Greeks

BY GRACE WIJERATNA

The ancient Greeks were an intelligent and industrious civilisation, founded nearly

2500 years ago! They were famous for their new ideas, culture and empire building.

They created one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen. We still use many

of their inventions and ideas today.

What the Greeks liked to do and what they were good at

The ancient Greeks were great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, architects

and even politicians. Greek society was very open and allowed lots of debate and

discussion. Greece was one of the first countries to practice democracy, which resulted

in the development of lots of good ideas and empowered the Greek people.

The dark age

Around 1100 BC Greece entered

the dark age.It is known as a dark age

because nobody knows much about what happened-all

written language and art

just disappeared out of sight!

After the dark age

In 800 BC, almost 300 years after the

dark age began, the Greek

civilisation slowly emerged, and

everything went back to normal, they

started trading again, and made all

different things.

Around 480 BC Greece entered a golden

age, which lasted for 200 years. They

built extraordinary temples, made

scientific discoveries and wrote

unimaginable plays and scripts!
