.. He was going to teach a whale English. Yes, it was going to be a laborious job, but it could work. People had told him it was impossible, but Will believed anything is possible. He was determined to finish this plan, determined to be the first man to teach an animal to speak! Well, first man to actually succeed. He would also be the owner of the first animal to speak a human language.

Will was making a book, like a dictionary, but with all the pronunciations and pictures. He had taken ages to write these words and mini stories, to find artists to draw pictures, to imagine how to teach the whale. He was almost finished, he just needed to receive the drawings. Well, there was actually one other thing that was important in this plan: the whale.

Weeks later, he had bought a whale from a local zoo. The zoo wouldnt allow him to take it home, but let him keep it in a spare storage hut in the zoo, where the zookeepers could still come and feed it. With his diving suit on, he splashed into the whale's tank. 'Salt' read the sign on the tank.

First, he needed to gain the creatures trust. Reaching out his hand, he held it up to the whale, palm forward. The whale crept forward, before nuzzling her head into Will's hand. Knowing he had quickly gained the whales trust, he climbed out the tank and grabbed the first piece of paper. 'Hello.' it read. Will thought it would be a good one to start with, a simple greeting.

He read out the word on the card in a slow, deep whine, like a whale call. Will repeated again. He kept doing this over and over again, until the whale understood that maybe it was what she should do too. Salt made a loud whine, slight making out 'hello' but not quite. Will repeated again, so did Salt. This went on for a while.Maybe this could work?

A few days later, a zoo keeper came into the hut to feed Salt.

'Hello!' The zookeeper said , knowing she would get no reply.

'Hello.' The whale said to the terrified zookeeper.
