Honduras is a country in Central America, and many
people living there are very poor. In recent years, life
has become even harder for people living in this part of
the world. The country is often hit by very powerful
hurricanes, which cause a lot of damage. It also suffers
from drought, which is when not enough rain falls and so
crops don't grow and there isn't much water. These
problems are made worse because people chop down the
forest for fuel and to make money. Forests help to
produce rain, and provide protection against floods and
landslides when hurricanes happen.
ASSEMBLY 7th JANUARY
As part of our assembly we heard about some
resolutions made by three children in Honduras.
On the left is Rodin Pindea Paz. The chopping down of the trees was bothering him, and he made a resolution to start making life better for his community by planting lots of trees. Since then Rodin and his classmates have planted 14,000 trees! He is proud of his efforts to help the environment, and is looking forward to a brighter future. He says: ‘It’s important to protect the forest. Some people do, but others don’t. It’s because some people think about the future, and others don’t.’
Do any of you have resolutions that might help the environment?
The girl on the left is Edith Jimenez Montoras.
She is 11 years old, and she has also made a change
for the better. She was concerned because her
school used to burn rubbish and she says ‘if you
burn rubbish you’re destroying nature’. She came
up with a plan of action for her school, telling
them that ‘you can do other things instead like
make holes and bury your rubbish, and you can
recycle a lot of things, such as cans, bottles and
paper.’ The recycling scheme that she has set up
has been a real success – another example of a
change that has made life better.
Meet Jerzon. He is 11, and has been making changes to help his own family. He has set up an enormous vegetable patch to help feed them. Jerzon has been the first person in his village to grow new crops such as pumpkin and carrots, and his family now depend on him for their vegetables.
Sometimes we all need help to achieve our goals. These children have been helped in their efforts to make positive changes by local organisations supported by Christian Aid. Christian Aid is a charity that works in around 50 countries to help people who are living in poverty.
How could we improve our school
environment in 2014?
Can we help Christian Aid to help
children like Rodin, Edith and Jerzon?
