Using your mind’s eye – A biography of David Almond
“ Words should wonder and meander they should fly like owls, and flicker like bats and slip like cats.”
- By David Almond (15 – 11 – 14)
Slowly over the years I am going to tell you about the amazing life of David Almond. The truly wonderful author of Skellig.
It all started in the small town of Fehling on the edge of the river Tyne. He was bought up on the 15th May 1951. He grew up in a large Catholic Family (who were a bit Goth).Surrounded by many friends and relatives (What a busy household).
As the years went by and as he got older he went to Saint Joseph’s Arssie Technical grammar school. He was very creative and curios ever since he was young. He loved birds and Angels, because he went to church a lot (He still likes the song Hozier take me to church). This inspired him to write Skellig a award winning book.
Ever since his father and baby sister died. He was heartbroken and had difficulties with his mum. When he reached the age of 13 he couldn’t cope anymore and went to the boarding section of his school.
A few years later he went to ST. West Angin University. Although he had some financial problems so he was not that well educated for the future. When he came back from university, to his horror he found out that his mum had arthritis. This influenced him to write Skellig later on. (Some of the characters are based around his family)
As he developed into an adult, he became a teacher of literacy. Before that he was an artist who was not very successful. Then he became a writer, but his first book was disapproved by 33 publishers.
Later on he wrote an award winning book called Skellig in 1998. This gave him his title. In total he wrote 46 books up to 2015, not all were approved. However, his book Skellig was so good it was turned into a movie.
Now we have reached conclusion. And that we must all learn that some peoples sadness does turn into happiness, and that you can have a bad early life but grow up to be famous. Remember that his pain was turned into happiness and beauty. Maybe another famous book or film will come out by somebody like him. His love is reborn. Thank you for this lesson in life David Almond.
