The Bat Walk
By Jessica and Evie

Today Drew and Fleming got to go on a bat walk with a woman called Jeanette, who knows loads about bats. It was very interesting.
First, Jeanette talked to us about bats, which taught us a lot. Here are some of the things we learnt...
1. Not all bats are nocturnal.
2. They are heat sensitive.
3. They have normal sight but they can't see in the dark.
4. To find food in darkness, bats make a noise and if they hear sound waves bumping off an object, they've found food.
5. Some of them eat insects but other types eat fruit and nectar.

After the talk, we went for a walk to the woods. We didn't see any bats, but we did see bat holes in trees that were pecked by woodpeckers. You know if there are bats living in the hole by seeing if there is a stain made from its poo and wee down the tree.
Even though we were a bit tired afterwards, it was a very enjoyable and we found out a lot of fascinating entertainment. What a great day!
