May 24th 1533
Dear Diary,
I am starting a diary so I can share the terrors of King Henry VIII's court with out being hung. But first let me start from when I was a helpless little infant.
I was born on the 7th October 1497. I was born in Augsburg in Germany however I now live at the English court as a painter. My father was also a painter and also a Hans Holbein so it was very confusing that is why I am called Hans Holbein the younger. My father taught me and my elder brother the skills of an artist so as promised we would go and become apprentices to Hans Herbston, this was 1515.
I am presently halfway through a painting called the Ambassadors. It is of two French men called Jean de Dinteville and George de Selve. I think I will put a nice rug in it, I just adore a good rug.
It is very hot this summer so the plague is sure to come, in Germany we never had plague, but anyway as you know the plague is deadly. However I shall have no rest, the King has asked me to paint ANOTHER painting of him.
Signed,
Hans Holbein
