The Tudors
The Tudors were a Welsh-English family that ruled England from 1485 to 1603, 118 years.
The Tudors had been trying to rule for ages, they had been fighting the War Of The Roses
from 1455 to 1487 because some barons felt that they were not the rightful kings.
In 1399, Henry IV made his cousin, Richard II abdicate and snatched the throne for himself. The barons thought that the relatives of the Tudors, the York family should of reigned.
The 32 years of fighting were called The Wars Of The Roses because the Tudors and the Yorkists fought under a different coloured rose.

The Tudors had a red rose.
The leader of the Tudors at the end of the wars was Henry Tudor.

The Yorkists had a white rose.
The leader at the end of the wars was King Richard III.

On the 22nd of August, 1485 the Tudors won the Battle Of Bosworth with help from the Earl of Richmond. They killed Richard III and Henry became king.

King Henry VII was a good king that was strict with money. By the end of his reign, England was very rich! He married Elizabeth of York to keep the Yorkists happy and to prevent rebelling. together they formed the Tudor rose. They had two boys, Arthur and Henry.

Prince Arthur was taught all the skills needed to become king. He was clever and Henry lacked attention. He married Catherine of Aragon.

When Arthur died unexpectedly, Henry became king Henry VIII of England. He was 17 years old and good looking. He played the lute, the harpsichord and could sight sing. He was also good at sports such as the javelin, archery, jousting, tennis and hunting. For the first part of his reign he was Catholic. He could speak French, Spanish, Latin and Italian.

He married Catherine of Aragon who was Spanish but divorced her because she couldn't produce a male heir. Henry wanted a boy as there could be more wars if a girl was on the throne. Catherine was heartbroken. When she died Henry dressed in yellow and partied for days.
She left behind her daughter, Mary.

Anne Boleyn was Henry's second wife. She had a "sixth" finger on one of her hands. She gave birth to a girl named Elizabeth. Henry was unhappy and claimed that Anne was a witch. Henry played tennis while she was beheaded.

Jane Seymore was Henry's third wife. She was his favourite wife and when he died, she was buried next to him. She gave him a sickly baby boy, Edward and Henry was delighted! When she died he was devastated.
Henry married Anne of Cleves because she came from a powerful country that he wanted to make friends with. He saw her portrait and thought that she was beautiful but it turned out that she wasn't. Henry eventually divorced her but, to keep the countries friendly, gave her lots of money and a nice house.

Henry fell in love with Kathryn Howard but when he discovered she had been flirting with other men, he chopped off her and her boyfriend's head.

Katherine Howard was Henry's last wife. Henry was old and sick and needed a nurse and friend who would keep out of trouble. Katherine believed it was her duty to marry Henry and did what he said. When Henry died she married her true love, Thomas Seymore.

In 1534, Henry made himself head of the church of England so he could divorce Catherine of Aragon. This led to the forming of the Protestant church. It was known as the Reformation.
The Protestants and Catholics were very different. Here are a few examples...

Catholics Protestants
Fancy churches
Plain churches
Fancy prayer books
Plain prayer books

No Pope
Services in Latin
Services in English

Soon enough, everyone was taking sides. If the monarch reigning was a different religion to you then you had to pray in secret or get your head chopped off.

During Henry's reign, an average of 5 peoples heads a day were chopped off!

Edward VI ruled from age 10 to 16. He was a sickly child and got very ill a lot. He liked writing and Greek. He was Protestant

Lady Jane Grey was distantly related to the Tudors and was put on the throne by Edward's protector to prevent a Catholic being on the throne. The plan didn't work though. Mary, Henry's first daughter who was Catholic fought with them and won. Lady Jane Grey was executed after ruling for nine days.

Queen Mary I was a good Catholic and chopped off loads of Protestant heads. She was very unpopular and married Phillip I of Spain to make her very powerful. He didn't love her but married her to become King of England when she died. Mary was very musical and had Italian Grey hounds. She also liked riding and hunting.

Queen Elizabeth I was 25 when she came to the throne. She liked hunting, poetry, songs and dancing. She was very clever and fluent in six languages. During her reign, England became an enemy of Spain and we fought the Spanish Armada against them. We won because of some wind!
