There were two types of Tudor schools.
Petty Schools - You were taught how to read. You started aged four.
Grammar Schools - You were taught Latin. You started aged seven.
Only rich boys went to school. Girls stayed at home and did housework or they had jobs.
Boys were taught for work and girls how to be a good wife. Really rich families had tutors to teach boys at home.
Another type of school was a Parish school. These were not as common as the others. The local Vicar taught the boys to read and write.
At school, pupils often had to speak in Latin. Other subjects were Greek, RE and maths. Writing was practised by copying the Lord's prayer.
There weren't many books, so you read from a hornbook instead. These were wooden boards with the alphabet and other prayers on them. They were covered with a layer of cow's horn.
The teachers were very strict and if you were naughty, you got whipped with a cane. Sometimes boys were too scared to go to school because of the beatings! Some rich children had whipping boys who got whipped when the child was naughty.
School was for six days a week and holidays were shorter. The school day started at 6:00am in the summer and 7:00am in the winter. It ended at 5:00pm.
