The changing of Michael

The reader first meets Michael in Chapter 1 where he seems quite independent as his parents were spending more time with his baby sister.

As the novel develops, so does Michael's character. He becomes more social thanks to his friendship with Mina. As his parents get more stressed about the baby, he also becomes more concerned and upset. By the end of the book Michael is more open to Mina, the baby and Skellig and less quiet and less closed-hearted. This shows as he has had a strong friendship with Skellig and Mina. With the baby he had felt his heart beating with hers.
