Sir Henry Morgan

Sir Henry Morgan (1635 - 1688) was a Welsh buccaneer and an Admiral in the Royal Navy. As a buccaneer he was one of the great pirates of his time and he managed just about not to break the law!!!

Family background: His father was Robert Morgan, a farmer in Caerau, Cardiff

Early life and childhood: He grew up in Wales but not very much is known about his early life. He moved to Jamaica to live with his uncle when he was a teenager.

Education: Sir Henry Morgan’s education was basic, he left school early and was more familiar with a pike, a very long spear type of weapon, than he was learning from books.

He received his real education after leaving school and began to travel the world.

Marriage: He married his uncle's daughter but they had no children.

Life as a Pirate: In 1668, he sailed to Panama (a Spanish port), and captured forts, castles and land. He also threatened to burn the town down if the President of Panama didn’t hand over a lots of money.

When the battle was over, Morgan sailed back to Jamaica, bought himself a house and tried not to be a pirate!!!

A few years later Spain declared war on Jamaica, so Morgan once again attacked Panama and won. But England was actually not at war with Spain, so they were unhappy with him and dragged Morgan back to England to be punished. But, Morgan had some powerful friends and so never went to jail. He moved back to his home in Jamaica to drink rum!

Died:1688 in Jamaica of alcohol poisoning, aged 53.
